I had planned to release The Dawn on bandcamp on 20th, but…. apparently they don’t do scheduled posts. So it’s up now! I’m very nervous but very happy to take this leap.

The Dawn is a folk-acoustic tale about walking into nature at dawn as the sun rises, or at dusk as the moon sings to you of her lost love.
I wrote ‘The Dawn’ soon after seeing Kim Churchill live in Launceston at the Arc in late 2025. He spoke about his album ‘Dawn Sounds’, all written at dawn. He said there’s something special about the dawn, something special about everyone still being asleep while you work. We agree.
The next day I sat down and tried to put what dawn means to me into words.
The first verse is literal enough. I love Dawn because it’s quiet, before the day, before any responsibility has started. Free time... Shouldn’t all time be free?
I Love the Dawn It's like the Earth is taking A big deep breath before the day I love the Dawn All the people are still sleeping I can do some of my restful thinking
There is peace, joy and a sense of magic. Even more so when walking into a field of grass or into a clutch of trees that sound like they’re speaking to the wind. And the birds.
The fields are aglow with an orange halo Into the fields Into the forest I can go And no one will know And no one will follow
It feels secret to walk amoung trees and birds when no other human knows where you are. No one can follow you on this path. In the modern age, this feels special.
There’s something else that’s magical about watching the sun wake from somewhere secret. And the shade of orange in the photo below is my absolute favourite. Warm and alive. No expectations. No plans.

Having this song has encouraged me watch the dawn more often than I did even before. It has given me even more magic.
So what about dusk? Well I love that too, but for a different reason. It has a similar feeling. The other in-between-time. In between the duality. A grey to the black-and-white.
I love the Dusk It's like the Earth is waiting Just because the Moon - she will sing The Moon - she sings a sad song 'Cause the Sun - he was her lover in another life And now she lights up the night Into the fields Into the forest I can go And no one will follow
There are many myths and legends about the Sun and Moon where they were great friends or lovers who separated for one reason or another. One of my favourite reasons being when the Moon disagreed with the Sun’s ambition to light up the Earth all day and all night. Excessive.
So she left. The full Moon somehow looks lonely on a clear night. Maybe this is why.
When the moon sings her sad song A true matter of right and wrong The loneliness of longing Of what is taken away too soon Into the fields Into the forest I can go And no one will follow
The bridge of ‘The Dawn’ describes more of the Moon’s lament of her separation from the Sun. She left the Sun because she thought his plan was wrong, not because she really wanted to go. My addition to the lore is that now she sings to herself when she is furthest away from the Sun, in the darkest night. And the Earth listens.
They will never be together again. Cursed to watch each other from afar.
And I’ll try to hear the Moon’s song, while walking through the fields and forest, listening.

Thank you for being here <3
